About this School Project (1st: Matisse Paper Cut Outs)
Students learned about artist Henri Matisse and his non-traditional collage style of making artwork! Matisse made large scale paper collages by cutting out organic and geometric shapes and overlapping them to make an interesting composition. Matisse also created silhouettes out of black paper of objects, people dancing, or animals to add on top of the colorful paper for contrast. We learned about positive and negative shapes and how they can add different effects to our pictures. Students were challenged to create their own Matisse inspired paper collage and come up with different silhouettes representing people, animals, monsters, fish, etc. They used scissors and glue to put their projects together and had so much fun making up stories to go along with their artwork!
