About this School Project (K: Basquiat Dinosaur!)
Kindergarten students learned about artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat in honor of Black History Month! Basquiat was a wild expressionist painter who liked to mix paint right on the paper and draw dinosaurs and monsters; instead of images from real life he would draw images he thought up or from dreams he had. Basquiat grew up in Brooklyn, New York and did not have a lot of money for art supplies so he drew and painted on anything he could (newspaper, cardboard boxes, scrap paper, etc.) Students were challenged to paint in the style of Basquiat by creating a collage using Black History Month newspaper clippings that they ripped and glued to their papers before painting. They picked 2 of the 3 primary colors to action paint their backgrounds and drew dinosaurs in the style of Basquiats famous painting "Pez Dispenser". They added black paint to their dinosaurs and added colorful details with oil pastel. Basquiat often added words and symbols around his images so students also added words like, "KING" or "QUEEN" to their pictures.
