About this School Project (1 - Crayon Resist Still-Life)
Students learned about the life and work of Henri Matisse and used his still-life paintings as inspiration for these paintings. We carefully examined a variety of his work and noticed his use of shape, color, and pattern. Each child followed a directed drawing lesson to make the vase and flowers and then added background details of their own design. Crayons were used to add lots of colorful patterns in several areas and then watercolor paint finished it off. It was fun to see the students react to the crayon resisting the paint, especially if they drew with white crayon.
