About this School Project (Faith Ringgold Inspired Story Quilt)
Kindergarten artists learned about the artist, author, and illustrator Faith Ringgold. They learned that Faith Ringgold made story quilts. Story quilts have a picture or a story made out of fabric. Faith Ringgold painted her picture on plain canvas fabric and created a border or frame using patterned fabric. She sewed all her fabric to make a quilt. After reading Faith Ringgold's book "Tar Beach", kindergarten artists drew themselves flying over wherever they wanted to fly. This was inspired by Ringgold's main character, Cassie, who flies over the city where she lives. We worked to draw ourselves using shapes. Then we glued pieces of fabric like a border or frame around our drawing to make it look like a quilt and feel soft.
