About this School Project (Self Portrait Collage (Campbell))
We began this project by painting the background. They were to keep it simple and make a non-objective painting. They could choose the colors they wanted and completely cover the page. Then we talked about how to draw ourselves. Working from a template, we talked about correct placement of the facial features and proportions. Students had mirrors at their tables, and although they were not expected to make an exact drawing of themselves, they were able to observe themselves more closely and add birthmarks, freckles and correct eye color. Finally, they chose the closest yarn color to their hair color and added hair. Naturally some took more time than others, but they all show lots of personality and the kids enjoyed making them!
