About this School Project (101 Scarab Beetles)
First graders are learning about ancient Egypt and symbols commonly seen in their art and artifacts. They began with hieroglyphs and made a cartouche with their name, but then moved on to these scarab beetle sculptures. We talked about the mythology of the scarab beetle and how Egyptians thought a scarab pushed the sun through the sky each day. The students observed scarabs in examples of ancient art, and they used clay and craft materials to make their own scarab.
