About this School Project (1st Grade - Woven Christmas Trees)
Our first graders began by talking about how weaving is the textile art in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads - called the warp and weft - are interlaced with each other at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. This paper weaving project takes super simple materials and turns them into a bold artwork! We started by folding our papers in half from the bottom to the top. With the folded edge at the bottom and the opening at the top, we used a ruler and drew a line across the top called the ‘STOP line’. Then the students drew lines the width of the ruler from the STOP line to the folded edges of the paper and cut on each line making sure not to cut past the STOP line. When finished, their looms were ready to start weaving. After the weaving was complete, to turn our woven loom into a Christmas tree shape, we talked about symmetry and folded a piece of paper in half. Next, we traced a tree template and cut out the folded shape and glued the cut frame on top of the woven paper. The Woven Christmas tree was finished by adding a brown tree trunk and a yellow star on top. It was a lot to pay attention to, but as the students worked through the logistics of weaving, it helped with their fine motor skills, patterning, eye-hand coordination, listening skills, problem-solving skills and concentration. Well done first grade artist!
