About this School Project (Apple Still-life)
We learned about Still-life paintings over the past 2 weeks. I showed the students several still-life paintings. I told them clues to look for in a painting to decide if it is a still-life. Many still-life paintings have fruit and/or flowers in them. Many still-lifes have a table in the painting. Still-lifes are usually inside a house. I then held up different paintings and asked: "Is this a still-life?" If the students said "yes", I would ask them to tell me the clues they found. I also held up paintings that were not still-lifes. If they said "NO that is not a still-life", I asked them to tell me why. They did a great job being art detectives and finding the still-lifes.
Since it is now Fall, we focused on Apples. We talked about where apples grow. We talked about the parts of an apple. I brought in apples of many different colors for the students to hold and look at. I asked them to tell me the colors they saw. Many were surprised that apples are not just red. We saw yellow and green on the apples and sometimes brown. I demonstrated how I would look at my apple and then paint the colors I saw. If I saw yellow on the top of my apple, I would add yellow paint. It was amazing to watch the students really look at an apple in their hand and paint the colors they saw.
I also had them add stems and leaves. we talked about how apples do have leaves when the farmer picks them, but the grocery store removes them
The second week we created the scene for our apples. The students ch
