About this School Project (Georgia O'Keeffe Poppies)
Georgia O'Keeffe was an American artist. She was born in Wisconsin. She grew up on a farm and helped her family by cooking, sewing and working in the garden. Georgia knew when she was really little that she wanted to be an artist. When she got older, she studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Photographer Alfred Stieglitz gave O'Keeffe her first gallery show in 1916 in New York City. Alfred and Georgia married in 1924.
O'Keeffe became famous for her extra large paintings of flowers. She painted flowers as if she was looking through a magnifying glass. The flower petals went off the edge of the canvas. Sometimes, Georgia painted her flowers so close-up, that it was hard to tell they were flowers.O'Keeffe's poppy paintings are well-known. Kindergarten and first grade students saw several of her poppy paintings before painting their own.
Some artists use paint right out of the tube, and some artists mix colors as they paint. For this lesson, students mixed primary colors (red, yellow and blue) to create secondary colors (orange, green and purple).
