About this School Project (3rd Alma Thomas)
In this lesson, students will create a painting inspired by the bold, abstract style of African American artist Alma Thomas. They will choose a simple or complex shape as the focal point of their artwork and select a color pattern to repeat around it, echoing the shape’s form. To add movement, students will incorporate continuous or broken lines around the edges of the shape, inspired by Thomas’s use of broken lines. The lesson encourages exploration of color, shape, and line while introducing students to Thomas’s legacy as an artist and teacher who celebrated themes of space and nature.
