I made this for Reagan because she loves dinosaurs. Also I created a coat of arms by carving, slipping, scoring, sticking, and smoothing.
About this School Project (3/4 Clay Coat of Arms)
Students explored the history of coat of arms, which were used to represent families, individuals, or groups through meaningful symbols and imagery. They connected this tradition to their own lives by designing and creating a personal coat of arms out of clay.
First, students sketched their ideas on paper, choosing 1-4 symbols to represent themselves, their families, or even characters/celebrities they admire. Then, they rolled out clay slabs, cut out their shield shapes, and used carving and attaching techniques to bring their designs to life.
While waiting for their clay to be ready for glaze, students created backgrounds to photograph their coat of arms on. We discussed places and backgrounds that can relate to our coat of arms. I prompted them with the question, "where would you keep your coat of arms if you could display your it anywhere in the world?".
After their clay pieces were fired in the kiln, students applied 3-5 glaze colors to emphasize their designs. A second firing gave their coat of arms a colorful, glossy finish.
This project helped students learn new clay techniques, think creatively, and use art to tell their own stories. We hope you enjoy their work!
