About this School Project (2S Self Portraits! Value! Form!)
Art Vocabulary:
Value; monochromatic: self portraits; contrast; form; light; shadow; sphere
The second grade students were super excited to learn new ways of controlling their colored pencils and learning new techniques with paint as they created monochromatic self portraits with their backgrounds featuring lines and/or shapes that contrast with the way they created their hair. (For example, if they created curvy hair, their background should contrast with jagged lines, or shapes with angles.)
This is a big challenge for second grade, but they absolutely loved seeing how they improved their control of their media and tools with practice. We talked about how they have become better at their various sports and activities through practice. It takes practice to get better in art. They really feel proud! To scaffold student learning about "Value" (or the lightness or darkness of a color) these self portraits are "monochromatic" - that means "One Color" - they created different values of one color to create their self portraits. They were also introduced to to the art vocabulary word: "Form" - Light and shadow help to create visual form (they LOVED seeing the flashlight create highlights/cast shadows in different directions as it moved around a sphere.)
They also had some practice using paint brushes in a specific way used to create different values. I love these self portraits, and I hope that you do as well!
