About this School Project (5-Character Weaving)
Fifth graders discussed the art of weaving and looked at examples from various cultures. Each student decorated a piece of matboard with a simple landscape before turning it into a cardboard loom by cutting slits in the ends. Once they wrapped their loom with warp thread, they began weaving weft yarn to make their own weaving - designed to become a person with a skirt or pants. Choosing yarns with a variety of colors and textures added interest to their character's outfit and body. Hair and google eyes were added last to complete the block-like character. Some kids chose to make their weaving a self-portrait.
