This is, in my humble and somewhat biased opinion, the coolest spider ever. The clarity of the central image juxtaposed with the wash of the out-of-focus background makes us focus on the central arachnid figure, which almost vibrates with movement attained by the dynamic black outline of the brightly colored appendages. That’s why it’s so cool.

The tribal and nativistic resonances in this work call forward an examination of hegemonic power structures through the lens of an authentic indigenous framework. The artist’s subtly disguised self-reference implies a questioning of the appropriation of identity in a powerful context. And I like the colors.

Fascinating work; the contextual abandonment of predicated norms in the approach to negative space creates a visceral tension that elevates this piece to the strata of social commentary and oblique criticism. Well done.
