This is such a creative picture, Hadley. You included so many interesting details. Did you draw this from a picture you were looking at or did you make it up from your imagination? I really like the colors and the way you made them look textured on the building. The sky is really beautiful—very nice effect. I noticed that the building looks like a face—did you draw it that way on purpose? You did a really nice job!

This is a very fancy H, Hadley. At first I thought it was H for Hadley, but then I saw the cat so I’m wondering if it’s H for Hunter…hmmm…It kind of looks like a letter for a coat of arms from the medieval period (do you know what a coat of arms is?) except I’m not sure if they actually put letters on them. I can’t tell from the photo, but it looks like you used gold paint for the outline of the letter and for the border too and maybe you mixed some gold with the purple inside the letter to make it look shiny. I like the pretty vine and the flowers in the corners. Nice work! So, is it H for Hadley or H for Hunter…?

The title of this picture is Medieval Portrait. I guess you must be learning about medieval times. I’m wondering who she is. Is she a real person who lived during medieval times or is she someone you made up with your imagination? I really like her eyes and the pretty headband with the jewel. Was that your idea, Hadley, or did you see it in another picture? As always, you did a good job!

When I saw this picture I thought, “Oh! She looks like a pretty sugarplum fairy from the Nutcracker ballet!” But Artsonia said the picture was untitled, so I thought I would ask you about it when we have our next Zoom visit. But I just noticed that it says it’s part of the class project Nutcracker Ballet so maybe she really is a sugarplum fairy! I can’t draw bodies very well but you did such a nice job of drawing her and coloring her, Hadley. She looks very peaceful and happy. Her dress is so pretty—did you think of the design yourself? I really like the wintery scene you made in the background too. You’re such a good artist!

This donut looks so yummy! It makes me hungry for a donut! Did you make it out of paper mache? What flavor is the frosting? It looks like you also made a box with a lid for the donut. Did you make the pattern on the box paper or did you use paper that already had a pattern? If you made the pattern, I’m curious how you made the shapes and the blended colors. This looks like it was a fun project to make—did it make you hungry for donuts while you were working on it? Maybe your teacher gave you real donuts to eat while you did it…

This is a very interesting picture, Hadley. It’s called a “Zentangle Color Wheel”—I wonder what “Zentangle” means. I can see the color wheel and angles so I understand part of it. It looks like you used watercolors to paint the colors of the rainbow. You drew a cat divided into different sections with different patterns and colors. Do the patterns represent anything in particular or is it just meant to be whimsical? You really had to use your imagination for this project—and you have a good imagination! It’s very creative!

This is a cool picture, Hadley! It’s called “South American Mola Inspired Drawing.” What does “Mola” mean? Is that a kind of South American Indian or is it a style of drawing? Do the shapes have special meanings or are they just designs? It’s a very colorful drawing and I think the pink frame goes great with the colors!

Did you make up your own design for this vase, Hadley, or did you draw the design from a vase you were looking at? This project is called “Blue Chinese Ceramics” so I looked up that type of ceramics on the Internet and I saw some vases with designs that were a little similar. I can’t tell from the picture if the pink flowers in the vase are drawn or if you made them out of some kind of material and stuck them of the paper. Were you learning about China or ceramics? I wonder why they used blue—do you know? Nice art work!

This looks like it was a fun art project to do, Hadley. I like all the pretty colors you wove together—it looks like a flower. Did it take a long time to do the weaving? (it looks like you went around many times). Very creative!

This is such a cute llama, Hadley (or is it an alpaca?). The blanket is pretty—did you do some kind of weaving to make it? Were you learning about llamas/alpacas when you did this art project? Good job!

This is a very interesting picture, Hadley. I think you told me that you drew this picture for Dia de los Muertos (is that sort of the Mexican Halloween holiday?). I see you dedicated your picture to Luna—it looks like you drew dog bones in the eyes for her. It’s a very colorful picture. I like the flowers. Are those sunflowers in the corners? Nice work!

I wonder what this picture is about. Its title is “Faith Ringgold Tar Beach Quilt”—is that a story? Is the girl in your picture Faith Ringgold? She looks like she’s flying over a city. I wonder why… You’re really good at drawing people, Hadley. That’s tricky to do (at least it is for me). What is a Tar Beach Quilt? It looks like you made the frame out of some material pieces so it looks like a patchwork quilt. I’m very curious about this picture.

I think this is a very special Mother’s Day picture, Hadley—I love all the different types of flowers in your Spring Flower Pot, and I’m sure Mama loves this picture too. You really used your imagination and it’s very colorful too. Do you enjoy using watercolors? I’ve always wanted to be good at using watercolors. Did Mama ever tell you that she and I took some classes together to learn how to paint with watercolors? It was quite a long time ago.

This an interesting picture Hadley. I’m really curious what it is about. It’s called the Peaceable Kingdom. Is that a book? I know in the Bible it says the lion will lie down with the lamb so I’m wondering if it has something to do with that. You’ll have to tell me about it when we visit next time. You did such a good job of drawing everything, especially the animals (my animals never look right when I draw them). I also like the way you used shading and made shadows.

What a happy looking snowman, Hadley! He looks like he’s having fun swinging on the Christmas lights. The lights are so colorful. I noticed they’re rainbow colors—was that your idea? I like the snow—did you make it by flicking a brush (maybe a toothbrush?)? Have you had enough snow to make a real snowman lately? You really do very nice artwork!

I like your Byzantine mosaic, Hadley. Did you think up the idea of the fish picture yourself or did everyone in your class make the same picture? Was it fun to make? You had a lot of “tiles” to glue. Did it take a long time? Have you ever seen a big tile mosaic on a wall or floor? It must take a really long time to make those beautiful works of art. Did you know that Mama likes to make mosaics with tiles and broken pieces of plates? She’s made some very nice things. Maybe she can show you pictures of some of the pretty things she has made before.

I like your pumpkin painting, Hadley. It looks like you used a special art technique like maybe coloring the picture with pastels and then washing over it with thin black water color paint. It makes it look like a cloudy fall day. You can tell me how you did it when we have our next visit. It must be fun to learn different art techniques. Are there pumpkin farms in New Mexico? Did you get a pumpkin and carve it this year? I didn’t get a pumpkin to carve but I made pumpkin bread! Yum!

Your picture is very colorful, Hadley. Did you use paint or markers? I see you’re learning about the artist Justin Vining—your picture looks a lot like one of his pictures. He is a versatile artist (versatile means being able to do things many ways)—he has lots of different styles of painting. I think your picture is his whimsical style (whimsical means playful and unusual). It looks like you had fun making this picture ??

This picture is “out of this world!” (that’s another way to say it’s great!)—it’s very imaginative, Hadley. It says it’s called “Shape Creations”—I’m curious about that name. Did you start with certain shapes and then think of a picture that you could make from the shapes? Was the space theme your idea or did your teacher tell you to make it about space? I like the way you made things look like they are glowing. Did you use chalk to do that? You are so artistic!

I really like your artwork Hadley ?? I see the Abstract Cat picture that is on your bedroom wall—you made it so colorful. You also made the Audubon bird very colorful—it’s very beautiful. Is it a certain kind of bird or did you use your imagination to make up a bird? The Starry Night picture looks A LOT like the picture Van Gogh painted! I like the way you painted the waves in the Great Wave picture. Is there a story about a great wave (a tsunami?) that goes with the picture? It looks like you were learning about the Parthenon—there were a lot of sculptures of people on the Parthenon (who were all those people?) and you did a good job of drawing some of them. It’s really hard for me to draw people! I look forward to to seeing your next artwork ??
