Well, that's a picture that certainly triggers questions! As always, your art is incredible--the contrast of the yellow, blue, and green (the outside: sky and land?) overwhelmed by the stark gray column and black pit expresses so much just in the composition of the picture. And then, to see the girl falling into that pit--it's chilling for me. The girl's figure is so well done! Soaring into the unknown! Your choice of the position of the arms and legs--such abandon. And then the mystery of the two straight lines coming off the pit, or, maybe attaching the pit to the rest, is so subtle, but it's there and makes me wonder. I'm wondering if you're studying expressionism in art class. In any case, this picture is very expressive.

Daphne, I am so impressed with your philosophical work! Each one of us jumps to this black hole of unknown multiple times in our lives. What I like in particular: the person in the pit does not look hopeless! This is what we all do: fight and learn. Good luck to you with all your endeavors! You always have our love and support.

Beautiful! I love it!

How wonderful the color combination is. It must have taken an enormous amount of time to put on those tiny tiles! How did you keep especially the round elements of the picture from getting crooked?!?
- Nancy on April 17, 2024
I love it--from the name of the piece, to the colors you chose, to the length of threads and ribbons you left (and where you left them!), to your choices about which rows to make fatter and which thinner, to the aliveness of the whole piece of weaving! What a great art program you have there at Prescott, and what a wonderful young artist you are! I didn't really think of weaving as being expressive, but this piece is.

Daphne, I like your work so much! You selected lovely spring colors, and this piece looks very vibrant.

Wow!!!!

What an amazing title! I see only one dance picture. That was a surprise, since dance is so important in your life. However, that picture is of a dancer soaring through the air, which says a lot. And it's in the lower left corner, i.e. a cornerstone. I see your homage to California--interesting that the palm trees are apparently being blown by the wind. The city, I assume Chicago, is in three different pictures on what I think are three different kinds of weather days (or seasons?). And your kitty (two sweet pictures) is the focus of your attention. The flower is lovely. You are so good at drawing flowers! I love the flower picture you gave me for my birthday. Food--at least 6 pictures!--plays a central role in your life, I see. And I think I see your hermit crab, right? The blur in your life is a very colorful one, with just a tiny gray cloud at the top of the central, signature picture. That's so good to know--that your life is colorful.

I was thrilled to see a new piece of art from you, Daphne! As always, I really like the composition of your art, and that includes this piece. I also loved reading what you wrote about its creation, including about the artistic elements you used and your thought processes. I'm so glad you had FUN creating this piece!!! Because I think of you as usually being pretty confident, it was interesting to read that the work "express[es] what it would be like to feel confident." The way you wrote the word and all the designs woven around and through it, especially the red ribbon dancing gracefully above, below, and behind the orange of the word--all of that really focuses the eye on the middle, on "confident." The picture makes me smile broadly,

Daphne, I absolutely like this work. There are many pieces on the picture where you used patterns, and they all look very natural. I feel confident when I look at your work!

This pop art piece is so clever! When we talk, I’d love to hear about how you came up with the word “ping” and what you felt about creating your pop art piece. Did you enjoy it? My daddy (your great grandpop) and I used to love to play ping pong, so your piece brought a grin to my face and a sigh to my heart.

Daphne, I love this piece very much Colors are very good and balanced. Your "subconscious" is pretty close to my "subconscious", so I feel that I could draw the same curves to show my mood. But definitely I am not able to work so well with colors... Babushka

My Dear Daphne, this piece of artwork is amazing!!! It is, without a doubt, the most sophisticated of your art pieces this year. I carefully read what you wrote about producing it, all of which was wonderfully self-reflective and left me feeling that I had gotten a peek through a window of that incredible mind and heart of yours. I LOVE the colors and movement of the piece. I think the difference in technique of the background and the centerpiece very effectively focuses my eyes on the central part. I love the colors you chose and which you put next to it. In the lower left, you let the green partial triangle flow off the page - that pulls me off the page with it. Then, I pulled myself back to swoop to the right with the pink, red, and purple swoosh, topped with the calming deep green pedestal supporting the strong purple pointer to the right. Gorgeous! The overall circular look of the bigger shape is so beautifully focused and supported by the clear pinkish-purple ball in the upper quadrant of the central element. I could go on and on about how fascinating this piece is but won't. Suffice it to say that I will try to copy it to send to Cousin Dan, our family's art maven.

Purple! I love it! Georgia O'Keefe did stunning art. There's a very suspenseful ADULT mystery novel in which Georgia O'Keefe is the new sleuth in town and the central character. I really feel that O'Keefe power in your flower! And that the background is a kind of sand yellow/brown is great and reflects the desert land where O'Keefe did so much of her work and her awesome contrasts. Your flower really pops on that background.

OMG, this is a GORGEOUS painting! I love the richness of the colors and, especially, how you made the upper part of the mountains deeper in color than the lower part. That shows exactly how the sun is behind the mountains! It's just what the scenery looks like on my hikes in the Northwest! I'd love to take you there one day with backpacks or a boat. And that you painted the cloud bottoms a darker color (blue) than the upper parts--wow! Exactly! And the ripples around the rocks in the water show that there's a little bit of a current or wind. I LOVE it!!! I could write more, but I won't. But I do want to say that I can feel the peacefulness of this place.

I absolutely love this picture. All the details are shown very carefully, and colors are soft.

This hummingbird picture with flower is just incredible! I love the details of the bird, and the flower is so beautifully done, is so calm and inviting looking, it would attract any hummingbird.
- Nancy on November 8, 2023
And I just noticed the lovely colorful abstract flowers on the abstract grass next to the road. That's a relief from the darkness of the road and buildings. It's pretty.

I think the reflection of the clouds in the window of the hotel is incredible. Also, the fact that the clouds have shadows on the left, indicating clearly that the sunlight is coming from the right, shows real growth in Daphne's artistic skills. The contrast of the vibrant yellow of the lines on the street and the black of the asphalt is very effective. That makes the picture "pop." I love your art, Daphne!

This piece of art is soooo cool! I love how you did it and that you chose a bee. There's actually a very famous piece of literature by Franz Kafka told from the perspective of a cockroach. It's called The Metamorphosis. Even though the cross hatching was your least favorite part of the project, I like how it turned out. The birds are also a great touch!

This painting is definitely in some ways your most sophisticated. It is absolutely wonderful, very complex, and so full of meaning. I love all of its many parts, individually and as a whole!!! The music of Black Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s--wow. That's what I associate with this picture. I did not know my granddaughter knew anything about that time. What inspired you?

This painting, and ALL of your 3rd grade work, was so colorful! I love it! I had a mask made with this particular painting.

I love receiving pictures of your art. You are a wonderful artist--creative, imaginative, intelligent. You are learning specific elements about art that no one in school ever taught me. It is truly marvelous. I find the boxes fascinating--well done. Some are even flying! This particular piece of art reminds me of the surrealists, some of my favorite artists.

Daphne, I like this picture very much. I can feel this hot sun in the desert!

Cool! I didn't know that what you did was called "value." Thanks for the lesson. My favorites: the D (makes me want to crawl inside); the P (makes me want to pucker my lips and put my eye to the opening to peek inside); the H (makes me feel like sitting on top to catch sun rays). The A is dark and a bit foreboding, so I want to sneak past it. I love the happy blue bubbles all around!

Love the heart and the color blue and all the splatter stars in the universe. I also like the black outlines. I'm just waiting for the shapes to start swirling!

This is fantastic! I love the flow of the river and its color. I love the houses and that you made them different from each other, creating unique doors, coloring the houses differently, and putting "bakery" and "sushi" signs on the first two. The cement bank of the river is great--makes me really feel that the houses are raised above the river. The background colors make me think of sunset. Do I see a dog on the sidewalk??? Perspective--yes!

Daphne, it's a lovely city! My favorite would be water. It looks like Fontanka river in St. Petersburg, Babushka

Daphne, I was fascinated by your explanation! I especially like the D because I can see how much he ocean means to you. And the cactus P is so jolly and clear. Oh! I just now saw the tail on the cat A! The popcorn and movie on the N is really good. And I love the notes on the H, even though you think dance could be represented better. You're a thoughtful, terrific artist. I hope for more.

I LOVE your clothes on the woman! Great designs! And the chest of the woman is particularly thought-provoking because it's so abstract. Your interpretation of the background is also so interesting--it looks like a huge chain behind the woman. I'd love to hear your explanation. The way that I reacted is that what I see as the chain could be a comment on women in advertising and the way they are portrayed.

Wow! Making a face out of clay?!? That sounds really difficult. Congratulations! I really love your explanation of the process you used. I didn't know any of the correct face dimensions until you taught me here. Thank you, Daphne!

I didn't know a paper portrait could be so expressive--and lively! To me, it looks like the wind is blowing through your hair, Daphne. It's amazing that, just from paper, you made the eyes really say something and look so real. I LOVE seeing your art! Grandmommy

Exciting that you did a fresco! I love the frame decoration. Terrific fruit & veggie combo. Great grapes, especially--the white flecks and black shadows make them look realistic.

I LOVE this piece of art! The name itself is so clever. The rendering of the woman is amazing--face, hair, body, posture, hands--all in proportion and so real. The expression on the face really is enigmatic! I've never seen such a good person drawing by Daphne. All the details--wow! the spooky tree with shadows, eerie branches and roots; the soft-looking red clothing, made so by the black squiggles and the choice of red, contrasting with the stiff-looking, cool blue hat; the division of the background into distinct sections, starting from the bottom with light (yellow) and ending with the dark sky (works so well to pull the eye). And I love the stone wall up against the purple, pointy parts above it. The color choices over all are fantastic. Nancy (Grandmommy)
