I like the way it shows you're generally a quiet listener. Are you green with envy or Hulkish with great strength? Is life a chessboard where you have to carefully plan your next move?

Toby, I love the secondary colors you used on this piece. Can you tell me about how you created this artwork? Nana

Beautiful abstract. The colors work perfectly together. I can tell you put a lot of time into this picture. Grandma.

Wow This looks like a good background for something, maybe a noteook cover (do they still use notebooks that you write in?) It's all very mysterious; like the universe.

I saw one of these at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Big Apple, for $350 , but it was orange & black.

Very cool!! New media! Remind me to show you the tree Grandma Pip wove for me when we met.

I think your bull dog looks really cute and sweet. I love the little pink tongue. Really really good art work. One of your best! Grandma

Toby, Is Champ your school mascot? He looks pretty tough here with the spiked collar. Maybe he keeps Middleton safe. Love, Nana

Toby, I love the variety of hearts you drew! You used primary and secondary colors. The expressions on each heart are so different from each other. I don’t think I’ve heard of the artist you learned about who did this type of work. Love, Nana

Middleton School bulldog looks ready for action (sort of like greased lightning) . Don't mess with Champ!

Wow!! This is so cool!!! I love the bright colors and emotional expressions! I'd put this right up on my wall!!

I love the vibrant colors you used for your butterfly and pupa. It looks like they have jewels on them!
Posted 1 year ago by Nana

I love the way you mixed in your favorite color, purple. I bet you were the only one to give your butterfly a friend. They are both beautiful and intricate. Great job!

Great Job! I like the anatomical detail, including the clubbed antenna. use of texture to convey complexity of the wings, and inclusion of the larvae stage. I detect a budding anatomical/medical illustrator in Skokie!!

Great job! (but you're cuter than that) I see bangs, a big smile & little nose. You're looking right at me (& wearing green - did you draw this on St Patrick's Day). The eyebrows are saying something but I can't figure out what the message is. I also like the way you framed it.

I LOVE this solar eclipse drawing/painting. The colors and the way you arranged the rings are so attractive. It looks like you used mosaic tiles with grout, but I know it isn’t.

I'm here with Uncle Tom in Florida. He's an artist (& scientist) & really likes this piece. It reminded him of a black hole with different wavelength radiation coming out in all directions. He also thought it would make a great mosaiic with colored ceramic tiles. Maybe one day you'll get to see his art workshop!!

I can tell you worked so hard on this. It is a beautiful eclipse. The colors just pop out. I love it! Grandma

These wet leaves are beautiful. I love how you used warm and cool colors for the water. The swirly areas give the feeling of movement-as if the wind is blowing, like it often does in the fall. The leaves have detailed vein lines and great colors.

Your attention to detail is spectacular. I can see the lines in each leaf. So real! Fall is here and you made it beautiful. Grandma

Wow, this is so cool. I love the shapes and colors. Did you trace the leaves or did you do it freehand? Did you have them all organized neatly & then Evan came through like a strong wind?
Posted 2 years ago by Tompa (fan)

I looked Charles McGee up - he's from Detroit (where I just visited last month). This reminds me of Evan's work on lines but it's 3 - dimensional!!! Who is looking at us?

This is a cool sculpture Toby! It seems you’ve been constructing this sort of art for years! The designs you drew are interesting and I like how the pieces extend beyond the paper base.
Posted 2 years ago by Nana

Wow!! This is so cool!!! I feel like I need a few views from different directions, or maybe a hologram, to really appreciate it. I thought I saw eyes staring at me.

Toby, this is really interesting. When I first saw it I thought it was an abstract butterfly. But now I think it was just a lot of fun to make it! Love Grandma

I love the colors. When looking at the entire collection for the year, I noticed that your color schemes all blend and compliment each other. And I can see the shell of the turtle looks just like a turtle shell! Love Grandma
Posted 2 years ago by grandma

Toby, I love the intricate designs on this turtle. The colored dots are beautiful. It looks like it must have been fun to create this.
Posted 2 years ago by Nana

We all really like this. Evan & I used to play Baby Sea Turtle (where I'd bury him in sand & he'd escape to safety). I looked up the meaning of the Turtle Clan - "In the Iroquois Creation Story, the earth was created on the back of a turtle. It was there that life began to grow. The Turtle Clan represents the shifting of the earth and the cycles of the moon. The people of the Turtle Clan are considered the well of information and the keepers of the land."

Toby, There sure is lots of texture on this turtle! The shell is so colorful too. I like the surface the turtle is on.

This starfish is beautiful Toby! I love the colors you used, the black dots, the assymetry, and the many shades of purple you used in the background. I’m looking forward to seeing this one in person!
Posted 2 years ago by Nana

Purple Starfish!! I met some starfish when I camped out on the Olympic Pennisula a few years ago. Did you know they can grow back their arms? I really like the colors and lines and the way it all fits together.
Posted 2 years ago by Tompa

Is this a beautiful starfish floating in the ocean? It looks so peaceful and that must be the sun shining in the water where the white is coming in. You’re getting to be such an accomplished (hard word) artist. Love Grandma
Posted 2 years ago by Grandma

Toby, this is gorgeous. Everything is floating from the sea to the light. (At least that is what it looks like to me.) The best art is when everybody sees it a little bit different.

Great colors and composition. I like the bubble framing. Where is Kwazi?
Posted 2 years ago by Tompa

I love the colors on this beautiful jellyfish! Will you tell me how you made the bubbles? It looks like they’re moving!
Posted 2 years ago by Nana

Love this composition Toby. It looks like you used chalk and markers. The hearts look like the are 3D! I really like the jewel-toned, geometric background with some designs.
Posted 2 years ago by Nana

Love is in the air!! I like the way you used 5 hearts instead of 4 to intertwine them, and also the way they're translucent (you can see through them). Great job!!!!
Posted 2 years ago by Tompa (fan)

Just Beautiful!! Hearts are just in time for Valentine's Day.

Hi Toby, I love the colors you chose for the stripes. Look at the cat’s fancy tail! You’ve really used your imagination on this project! Love, Nana

Hi Toby, your mug of hot chocolate looks delicious-especially with all those marshmallows! I see the snowman out the window. This is a wonderful winter scene. Love, Nana
Posted 3 years ago by Nana

Toby! Hot chocolate on a cold day. It looks perfect. And of course we MUST have marshmallows. I love that we can see the snowman outside the window so we know that it is cold outside. You are a true artist. Great job!
Posted 3 years ago by Grandma

Now I want a glass of hot choclate!!! I can taste it and feel the steam warming my face!!

Complementary Cats are the best way to avoid a catastrophe! How does the white cat keep so clean? The pink ears brings them together. Great job!!!
Posted 3 years ago by Tompa

Toby, I love the way you layered the pieces of paper that you cut out, into the squares. The grey in the sky is pretty. The golden sunset is beautiful.
Posted 3 years ago by Nana

This is so creative. Lots of colors and shapes. The sun makes this a happy place to be!
Posted 3 years ago by Grandma

Whoa!! Mixed Media - your specialty! It's symetrical but not symetrical at the same time! I think it needs a title.
Posted 3 years ago by Tompa

Looks like it's time for Papa to visit and leave his caterpillars. Evan & I checked out the Botanic Garden and Evan thought he might have seen Fireworks (the butterfly) but the exhibit won't open until Memorial Day. How did you get the symmetry to match? On your butterflies you'll need more orange!
Posted 3 years ago by Tompa

This is a beautiful butterfly Toby! I want to hear all about the process of creating it!
Posted 3 years ago by Nana

Toby, this is the most beautiful butterfly I have ever seen. It’s perfect.
Posted 3 years ago by Grandma

This reminds me of when you drew the lines for Grandma Pip and me to show a road and how to make some of the objects appear further away than others. Was this scene supposed to be at night?

Do I see two hidden faces in this heart?

Just in time for Valentine's Day!!! I think I see Bear somewhere
Posted 3 years ago by Tompa

Great colors! I think I see Bear's face, asking to come home from rainbow land.
Posted 3 years ago by Tompa (fan)

Such a cute polar bear Toby. The shading you did on the muzzle, body, and face is interesting. I can see some snowflakes in the pretty purple, green, and blue background.
Posted 4 years ago by Nana

Great job but Bear is jealous!! He wants to know when you're going to paint his portrait.
Posted 4 years ago by Tompa

Great Job!! This really captures the colors I see on my bike rides nowadays.

This is just amazing!!!!! The dark sky for a cold fall day-the leaves falling. You are really really really talented. An artistic scientist!!!!
Posted 4 years ago by Grandma

Toby, I especially like the details on the pumpkin. You drew the curly vine and curved lines for the grooves.
Posted 4 years ago by Nana

That's a cool looking creature Toby! You really used your imagination on this one.
Posted 4 years ago by Nana

Mixed media!! Great Green - now let's mix red & blue for purple!! What do I think of the monster? Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo Wubba wubba wubba and a doodly do!

Toby, the fruit are so delicious looking, I want to eat them all up! Your are a very talented artist. Grandma
Posted 4 years ago by Grandma

This is great!!!! I can't believe you mixed your own orange!! Is my apple tree in the background?
Posted 4 years ago by Tompa

Toby, I really like how you used muted/dull colors and bright colors in the same composition...the watered-down version of the bright colors ties it all together.
Posted 4 years ago by Nana

I want to hear about how you like working with different types of paint!
Posted 4 years ago by Tompa (fan)

So interesting! I see lines that made a ladder like on your playset, I see lines making boxes, I see lines making stairs. What a great use of lines in your artwork. Go Toby!
Posted 4 years ago by Grandma (fan)

I see so many different shades of blue here!
