Thank you for taking a few moments to find out what has been happening in your child's art class. There is so much more learning going on than a glimpse in the hallways would show since we do so many digital extensions to our learning with our class set of iPads.

Also please take a moment to explore the resources I gathered to help your artist connect with Celeste from our one book one school event, A Nest for Celeste, including a draw-along with the author/illustrator Henry Cole.

Just for Kindergarten

Kindergarteners mixed the three primary colors to make a symmetrical design that had hints of the secondary colors. Then they used construction paper to design a body that was the best SIZE and SHAPE to turn it into a butterfly.

Then they used their imaginations and the magic of green screen to pretend to be the body of the butterfly they created.

Just for Grade 1

1st graders watched a tumblebook animation of the story, Lima Bean Monster. This inspired a fun and creative Lima Bean Monster drawing where each student designed expressive eyes, noses, mouths, teeth, and heads that filled their paper. Then they painted with color balance carefully traced it in black marker.

1st graders posed with their favorite vegetable as if they were the body of their Lima Bean Monster. Their paintings covered their heads. They layered their figure on an "Eat Your Veggies" background to make a graphic design poster that encourages healthy choices.

Just for Grade 2

2nd graders are learning who George Washington was as they carefully drew these realistic portraits.
I loved their sketches so much I posted them here.

They painted their portraits as realistically as they could including shadows on his face and a touch red mixed in to make his cheeks rosy.

Just for Grade 3

3rd graders learned to draw in perspective as they created the shape for their magic carpet. They needed to view it from a side angle so that they could ride it (stay tuned for that!)

Just for Grade 4

4th graders drew over a video of themselves saying a word or phrase. This technique is called a rotoscope. All their phrases link to together as they recite a patriotic message.

Just for Grade 5

5th graders are working on a collaborative Exquisite Corpse game inspired by the surreal artists. Each student contributes one Head, Middle, or leg painting that can be mixed and matched with others.
