Visual News from the Art Room:
The Capitol of Creativity at SKMS has started off with creativity spilling out into the
hallways and the front of our school. Last spring the art room was the recipient of two grants that are helping to create a "smART Spot Gallery" near the art room! Lowe's Toolbox Classroom Grant and an HEF grant together have helped purchase picture frames, a gallery hanging system, lights, an art rug and a digital tv display in the hall to share our art images! The gallery is almost complete and getting lots of admiring visitors already!
The art room was also blessed to receive a Technology grant which purchased a class
set of ipads for us to create, learn and post to our digital portfolios online. With the
new technology students are actively putting their work into their portfolio and learning to write artist statements.
As a whole school initiative Skyline had over 500 pinwheels created to celebrate our
wishes for World Peace. On September 23, 2015 6th grade students help sing our way
to a peaceful day on the announcements thanks to Mrs. Mongold then we planted
pinwheels in front of the school and watched the wind carry our wishes to the world.
You can see a video of the installation here:

The pinwheels will now be send to the organization
Students Rebuild Pinwheel Project. The organization empowers students with concrete ways to help our global community. The Pinwheels will support children affected by crisis—whether war or natural disaster—need help restoring a sense of normalcy and safety in their lives. One of the best ways to do this is to reintroduce the familiar routine of school, where teachers can provide structure and stability, and can work with children to heal. The International Rescue Committee partners with schools in crisis zones to create
Healing Classrooms—paired with support from parents and the community—so children can recover, grow, develop and learn.
Healing Classrooms trains teachers in special techniques to engage conflict-affected children with social-emotional learning opportunities and to create secure, nurturing learning environments. Funds generated by the Challenge will support the IRC’s
Healing Classrooms programs which:
- Equip teachers with skills to create safe, nurturing spaces where children can recover, grow, develop and learn.
- Create learning environments that provide children with a sense of normalcy, structure and stability to promote their well-being.
- Provide opportunities for children to build self-esteem and strengthen their interpersonal skills.
- Lay the groundwork for refugees to eventually return, reintegrate and become peacebuilders in their communities.
Each pinwheel that we created will be sponsered and a $2 dollar donation will be made in Skyline Middle School's name. Student made over 500 pinwheels which will equal a donation of over $1000 dollars to help students around the world. Our students are giving back from their heART!
Students have started the year off learning to be observed while experimenting with a
variety of materials. Each grade level is learning to learn look at the objects they are
drawing whether it is a shoe, a hand, a portrait, or a still life.
