Thank you for taking a few moments to find out what has been happening in your child's art class. There is so much more learning going on than a glimpse in the hallways would show since we do so many digital extensions to our learning with our class set of iPads.

Just for Kindergarten

Students explored the secondary colors with these beautiful pumpkin patch landscape collages. They mixed paint to make purple and added wind to their mysterious sky. They mixed to make green for grass, orange for lines that curve down the pumpkin, and brown for stems and leaves. Notice all the overlapping as they placed a pumpkin in the foreground, middle ground, and background.
Some only have a speck of horizon line showing, but that was important too.

Kindergarteners identified large, medium, and small circles as they constructed their drawing for their snowman painting. They overlapped the circles and used shapes to paint accessories.

Just for Grade 1

First graders made monochromatic fish with a base, tint, and shade of one color. Then the scales were drawn over the dried paint to show the visual texture. See this post to learn more about the lesson:

When finished, each student erased the backgrounds digitally and learned how to animate the fish in an app called Do Ink Animation app using our art room iPads. See the Class Animation Movies:

1st graders are learning about penguins as we sculpt one out of model magic clay. Students began with one lump of clay and followed all the steps until there was no clay left. There was lots of division in the directions (shhh-the truth is the lesson is full of math).

Just for Grade 2

2nd graders put their George Washington Portrait Painting on the dollar bill using Festisite.com
Then they reflected on what they would do for America if they were president.

Just for Grade 3

Students collaboratively made these landscapes of landmarks from around the United States to use for their stop-motion animations. The foreground and possibly the middle ground move across their backgrounds to create the illusion of movement as they fly over on their magic carpets.

Third graders turned shapes (circle, triangle, and rectangle) into forms (sphere, cone, and cylinder). Then made these forms look like vessels used for scientific experiments (florence flask, erlenmeyer flask, and beaker). Artsonia Art Gallery - Color Mixing Scientists

Then students mixed the primary colors together in different combination in each of the three vessels to make the secondary colors. Their backgrounds were designed with perspective showing a vanishing point and converging lines. They were painted with secondary colors in a checkerboard pattern.

Just for Grade 4

4th graders worked on creating their self-portraits in a three-quarter pose. They mixed tints, shades, and neutrals as they painted their portrait in a monochromatic palette.

4th graders only used one color (mixed with white & black) for their monochromatic portraits. This digital extension allows them to see what their portrait would have looked like in other color palettes.

Just for Grade 5

5th graders created a figure template while studying proportion. Then they used the template to draw three action poses. The paintings were painted with 6 colors that were balanced throughout the composition with line and shape patterns.
